Tomopop Review: Square-Enix Static Arts Sora
by Pedro Cortes on 02/25/2009 9 comments

Although it hasn't reached the popularity of the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts has gotten a tremendous amount of mind share for the few games that have been put out. Not including the upcoming PSP and DS games, there are only five Kingdom Hearts games, one of which is a cell phone game and the another a remake. So given time, it's entirely possible for Kingdom Hearts to stand along side Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest as Square-Enix's premier IPs.

That's a long way of saying that S-E is treating Kingdom Hearts as a first-rate series by selling excellent statues and figures. The line of Static Arts figures from S-E has included everything from statues of Cloud and Sephiroth to vinyl-like representations of Sora, so it's my pleasure to introduce you to the full-sized version of Sora from Kingdom Hearts 2.

Follow me after the jump to get more details.

Also, stay tuned to the front page, as a contest will be going up with this very Sora as the prize!

As much as I like this figure, I got to say that it has some crappy packaging. It feels cheap and flimsy, with a weak plastic window that pops open if you put any pressure on it. The quality of the cardboard is lacking as well. It tore when I put the barest of pressure on the top flap. This is the kind of packaging you would expect from a dollar store action figure, not a top of the line PVC statue. Considering the average price of the figure (between $85 and $105), you'd expect Square-Enix to display it better.

Oh and just so you know...

Thanks Square, you could've fooled me.

However, that is my only complaint with the figure. Everything else with the statue screams quality and attention.

Square-Enix has made itself an incredible looking statue. The sculpture chose a pose that is full of energy, getting across aspects of Sora's personality that a smaller action figure could never hope to get. Sora's smile could light up a room here. Add an explosive base with swirling wind and shooting starts and you get a figure that looks like it's literally leaping to life.

Bonus points go to the construction of the statue. This Sora is a solid mother, unlike other PVC statues on the market. When you hold it in your hands it feels well put together. It'll take more than a stiff wind to knock over this bad boy. Still, I'd be careful, as the stars and Keyblade stick out rather far, so a fall will probably damage them, regardless of the solid construction.

Let me elaborate further on Sora's face. Sora is the shining optimist compared to the dark cynicism of Riku, so any media with Sora has to reflect this important aspect of his personality.  The sculptor has succeeded in nailing that optimistic happiness in that big smile. It's a great highlight on a great figure.

The green, white, and blue whirlwind that acts as the base is yet another highlight among many. It feels alive and active, always looking like it's keeping Sora aloft. The stars shooting off the back end might feel tacked on to some, but to me it adds more personality to the piece as a whole.

I love how Sora's clothes and neclace look. They're perpetually in motion, and it looks fantatstic.

So overall, I completely recommend the Sora Static Arts statue. It's a great piece that'll look great in any collection out there, as long as you take it out of the box.
