Tomopop Review: Figma Winter Accessories
by Brian Szabelski on 02/24/2010 2 comments

Not too long ago, Good Smile and Max Factory announced they were have a special winter Figma campaign. For those who bought Figmas during the promotion, they'd be getting special winter-themed accessories for their figures to wear. Naturally, I was intrigued and had enough in the bank to check it out.

A little over a week ago, they arrived in my mailbox. Or more literally, the mail guy handed my Figma and the bonus accessories to me because my mailbox is too small. Either way, I decided to check them out and see if they were worth all the buzz and hoopla they were generating on the Internet.

Hit the jump and see if the latest Figma promotional accessories were worth it!

To actually get the special winter accessories, you had to order a Figma in stock at a participating retailer. I went with Amiami and ended up picking out the summer uniform version of Lucky Star's Miyuki, because not only is she lovely ... she was the only one in stock I wanted. Konata needed a playmate, anyways.

When my Figma arrived, the pieces themselves were just in a very small black bag packed inside the box. Nothing super fancy here, but then again, there were several different Figma for sale, so packing them into the actual Figma box might have been a little more problematic. If the box had somehow gotten open, though, it might have been easy to lose them.

Inside that small bag were two even smaller bags, which contained a scarf accessory and two smaller pairs of gloves in a matching color. If you look a bit closer, you can kind of see a little problem: the pair of gloves with three wrists flexing have a wider peg than the straight gloves do. In fact, try as I might, I could not get them on Miyuki at all because the opening for her hands was smaller than the width of the peg. As of the writing of this post, I haven't been able to use them as I don't have a Figma that they fit, so it seems like kind of a waste.

(Editor's note: I've been informed in hindsight the second set of gloves with the larger pegs are for Nendoroids. So, of course, they won't work with Figmas!)

Thankfully, nature was still pretty cooperative by the time she got here. Several snowstorms had left enough on the ground that we had quite a bit to go outside and play in the snow.

Of course, Miyuki jumped right into the snow, not heeding my warnings about the cold, especially since she was in her summer uniform ...

Well, look at you, all shivering. Guess you should have listened to me, right?

Of course, Miyuki wasn't done and wanted to try her hand at making a beautiful snow angel ...

Well ... ummm ... at least you tried, hun.

After that short diversion, we got down to work, and I got to checking out how the new accessories for my Figmas actually were.

First off, as you can see here, Miyuki has a lovely little scarf on. It's made from the same soft plastic her ribbon is, so it's likely malleable, and the actual accessory snaps on pretty easily. All you need to do is remove her head, place the scarf over the joint hole in her neck, and snap her head back on. It looks very nice on most figures as well, and no, they don't work for Revoltechs because of design differences. Or at least not for me. I tried.

The glove, as mentioned earlier, come in two different flavors, though only one seemed to fit Miyuki, which were the longer-pegged ones. They're pretty well detailed for accessories and when used in conjunction with the scarf, lead to some really cute looks and some great potential poses.

Unfortunately, all is not quite well ...

Yeah, that's a big, big problem. The mittens for the Figmas are not just loose, but prone to falling out if they're not posed facing up against gravity. The reason is quite simple when you take a closer look:

For some reason, Max Factory's designed the special accessories to have straight plugs, not the rounded plugs at the end that snap in like a normal Figma hand does. Of course, this means that they slip right out instead of being held in place, which is a huge, huge disappointment. I really wish they would have designed the pegs to be more like the regular Figma hands, as this clearly would have avoided the whole problem. You can probably use some kind of sticky tack to hold the hands in place, but it might be near impossible to get out once you're switching back.

It's really hard to say if Max Factory and Good Smile's bonus to customers was worth it. The scarf accessory sure is, but the mittens are not really so much worth it. The campaign is still ongoing if you'd like to pick these Figma accessories up, but I'd only recommend doing so if you can't live without them.
