Tomopop Review: Black Rock Shooter
by Colette Bennett on 02/06/2010 18 comments

Yes, I know, we're a bit late on posting our review of the much discussed Good Smile Company figure Black Rock Shooter. However, for the release of this figure, we wanted very much to bring you something new and different when it comes to seeing her and making a decision whether or not to make her a part of your collection.

When it came time to shoot this beauty, I decided to extend an invitation to Japanator's talented photographer Ace0fClub5, who was kind enough to put his own spin on this dark figure. I hope that you enjoy getting to see her through his creative vision. Maybe I'll even sucker him into doing this again for us in the future.

Hit the break for our review of Black Rock Shooter.

I'm sure that no one could have imagined that way back when an artist by the name of Huke created an illustration called Black Rock Shooter that it would gain the level of popularity it has. Some time later, its spawned everything from an anime to several collectible figures. And now, here is Good Smile's take on this iconic illustration (we hear there is already another one on the way).

As you can see, Good Smile decided to extend the class of this figure all the way to the packaging itself. BRS comes in a very large box, which is handsomely patterned with the same checkerboard look as her actual base. It's one of those boxes that you likely won't think twice about keeping, and you may even have a smile on your face as you add it to the toy storage closet (or garage).

You all know how I feel about focusing on the box too long, though. I like to get the toy OUT. Let's do that.

Oh, goddess, you take my breath away. Black Rock Shooter is simply the opposite of the classic Hatsune Miku, and you know what -- I love that. I love all her darkness. We've seen many beautiful shots of her face, but I love that from the right angle, you can see that her expression is stormy. And yet, still completely beautiful.

When someone says they don't care for the scar, I always have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. For me, the scar makes her infinitely more fascinating and lovely. Where did she get it? Why does she have it? I know, I'm a little sick, but hey, I like this kind of thing.

In case you don't have eyes, I'll sketch it out for you: BRS has a magnificent ass. I also adore the curve of that back foot and how it extends into the leg. This figure simply oozes grace and poise, while stepping neatly outside the boundaries of the majority of what's out there.

Let's get a better look at those sexy boots.

The gun is epic. It can be fully detached from the figure, as can the chain (you may have noticed we got creative with it!).

It's no shock she looks just as good coming as she does going.

Thought you might want a better look at her, ahem, assets.

I can honestly say this figure lives up to every bit of the hype that we (and many other sites) built up behind it. It shows every bit of the mastery and quality that Good Smile consistently exhibit in their products, but it also is so different from the majority of what is out there that I really have to applaud that departure. If you invest in any Miku figure, make this the one you spend your money on.

She is sold out through most retailers already, but we expect a restock very soon due to popularity. In the meantime, you can still preorder the Black Blade variant through retailers like Play Asia and Hobby Search. Good luck tracking down the original if you missed her ... you'll need it!
