Tomopop About Town: We Ain't Plastic in Lincoln, NE
by Rio McCarthy on 10/05/2009 3 comments

There are far too few vinyl toy shows here in the Midwestern United States, but thanks to Toy2R's We Ain't Plastic! show, our dire need for a great show has been fulfilled. Little known fact, but my very first custom toy I ever made was a Baby Qee, so this show meant a lot of me. Both Brian and I have shown you some of the fantastic customs that would be at the show. I was lucky enough to be able to make my way up to Lincoln, Nebraska on October 2nd to see all of the fantastic custom Qee that made their appearances there.

With over 50 customs it was a sight to behold for sure, so hit the jump to check out some of my favorite pieces from the show!

We Ain't Plastic

First off there was a HUGE crowd that showed up for the event, and after talking to some people I found out that this was as big as one of their Los Angeles events, so that was a bit of a victory for me. In the Midwest we get very few custom vinyl toy shows like this, at least that are within driving distance for most folk, so it was a great experience to see so many people enjoying the art form.

We Ain't Plastic

DJ Nost and DJ Trinidad kept the party hoppin' with their DJ battles they had throughout the night, which made for some awesome mixes. Both were very talented, and gave the perfect soundtrack for the event.

We Ain't Plastic

With over 50 customs to be seen it was only a matter of time before I stumbled upon some that we had written up here at Tomopop. On the left I found my favorite customizer's work the "Lesser Reanimated Rogue" by Josh F+ Pearce, and on the right I found another new favorite with "Doggy Maul" by Future Trunks. Funny thing about Doggy Maul is that the skirt used for detail in the front is actually from the Final Fantasy VII Tifa figure.

We Ain't Plastic

"Stereo Lab tha Golden Receiver" by Steve Gordon is another of my top favorite customs from the show. The facial expression reminds me of one of the cover's to KoRn's Issues album, which was one of my favorites, and I used to be obsessed with that album cover. All the details in this piece just make me giddy with happiness, and I want this in my collection so bad it's not even funny.

We Ain't Plastic

Wrestlemania VI was also in full effect and Hulkamania was running wild with this set of Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior customs. Both of them having fake hair cracked me up to no end, and I got a massive kick out of seeing these two make their appearance at the show.

We Ain't Plastic

One of the most insanely detailed customs I saw at the show was this "Bead-A-QEE" that was completely covered in tiny beads. It's a bit difficult to see in this photo, but there had to have been so much time put into this piece that it's ridiculous with as detailed as it was in person.

We Ain't Plastic

There were quite a few astronaut and space related customs at the show, but the one that blew it out of the water was this untitled piece by Oakley. Not only did he customize an awesome kitty Qee, he also created the spaceship, which all together looks phenomenal!

We Ain't Plastic

On the wall opposite from Josh Pearce's custom, I found yet another piece we had written up here - the "Totem QEE!" by Reactor88, which I absolutely love. The colors and designs on the Totem QEE never cease to amaze me and are just awesome to look at.

We Ain't Plastic

Front and center, right in the middle of the event were Jay222's huge custom Qee that he had been working on for the show. These were posted on the site a while ago, including a video from Jay222 on meeting the two Qee and how he created them. Both of his pieces were on pedestals in the middle of the room between the two sides of the room that were lined with custom toys.

We Ain't Plastic

One of the more timely customs, being as the movie's just coming out, was the "WTWTA" custom by Jeremie Memming which looks fantastic and mimics the art style from the book perfectly. I also adore his little Max Qee as well.

We Ain't Plastic

Giant Qee, such as this one, were hilarious to see in person because with so many children around they all wanted to pose with them. It's quite funny to me every time I see a vinyl toy that towers over a child, and I had quite the laugh fest over them.

We Ain't Plastic

Above the display case, posed proudly up top with the shoe boxes, were random Qee of all shapes and sizes. It was cute decoration, especially with how much it reminded me of my dire need for the tokidoki Qee which I love to death. It's just too cute for words!

We Ain't Plastic

One of my greatest moments at the event, was getting the honor of meeting Kevin Winnik, the CEO of Toy2R, who put the event together. I want to send a giant thanks to him, and everyone else who put this event together, as it's so greatly appreciated by not only us artists, but by everyone who enjoys the art form.

We Ain't Plastic

They were also nice enough to be giving out random blind-boxed Qee as door prizes, and everyone who went got one. Since my mom and I went together we both got one, which was also my mom's first vinyl toy, so it was nice to get to see her open her first blind-boxed figure.

We Ain't Plastic

As you've seen there were so many fantastic customs that we can't talk about all of them, but please be sure to check out the gallery for this post, as photos of all of the customs can be seen there and more. Toy2R has also released a video showing images from multiple angles of the customs that were in the show, so be sure to check that out below. This was one heck of a show that had a heck of a turn out, and I can only hope that this will mean more will occur in the future!
