Steampunk delights: The works of Klaatu Varata Studios
by Brian Szabelski on 08/02/2008 0 comments

We here at Tomopop have a love of robots, all things steampunk and great handmade creations. Today, we're pleased to show you all three in the works of Klaatu Varata Studios, including some amazing plasma weapons and robots built from wood and metal.

Based in Farmington, Arkansas, Klaatu Varata Studios is the workshop of artist Dillon Chandler. On top of some of his more steampunk-style creations, Dillon has a fair share of metallic creations that are pretty awe-inspiring, like a pirate ship made out of gears and chains or a giant metal bear. Both of those can be seen in his Web site's gallery. Dillon has also created a sci-fi backstory for his robots and plasma weapon pieces, outlining an entire history for where each came from. While the collector in me is impressed with his craftwork, the author in me is impressed with his storytelling skill.

Owning a piece of Dillon's work doesn't always come cheap, though: while some of his smaller pieces can be bought for $25 or less, the giant 9-foot high metal bear, known as Big Ben, runs for $2,200. For more of Dillon's creations, check out his Web site or Etsy store.
