Somakun is definitely a natural when it comes to making custom toys. His newest work of art is Barret Wallace from Final Fantasy VII and it's absolutely breathtaking. It took him around 2 weeks to finish the project which started from a Build-a-Figure Pitt base and stands 10 inches tall.
He went through the process he used to create Barret which included a clay mix of Sculpey, Sculpey III and Sculpey Firm, then he boiled the clay to firm it up. He used a cut up straw to create the barrels of the gatling gun, which can actually rotate. He got the dog tags from a Sigma 6 figure, and completely hand sculpted the face with Super Sculpey. One of the things I found most creative is that he used hot glue to make the torn sleeves on the jacket. He then painted it all by hand, gave it a dark wash and free handed the tattoo.
This isn't his first Final Fantasy VII custom he's made, but it's definitely my favorite to date. His previous customs include Cid Highwind and Cloud Strife in Kingdom Hearts attire. You can view the rest of his customs on his Figure Realm profile, that include Etna from Disgaea, Amaterasu from Okami and Gray Fox from Metal Gear Solid. You can also tell him just what you think of his amazing work.
