Static Arts Sebastian Michaelis - Authentication Help Please?
by WickedOrin on 07/29/2010 5 comments

This seems about the best place I could possibly ask something like this, so I'm hopeful. I'm familiar with identifying Final Fantasy bootlegs rather quickly via their boxes, but I'm trying to help someone determine the authenticity of a Sebastian Michaelis. (It's a "friend of a friend got it from Japan" sort of deal, and we're trying to dis/prove the friend's friend's credibility. *snort*) Am I looking for anything other than silver, indented text and blurry/discolored text and pictures, as with FF Play Arts boxes? Also, is the box more of a matte finish? The only actual legitimate pictures I've been able to find are extremely small, not as well-lit as I'd like, and I'm worried that I won't be able to tell for certain. I mean, I'm assuming the face alone will be enough even through the plastic, but I've been surprised at the quality of some bootlegs lately.

Thanks in advance for anyone who might be able to help me out. (And probably a mountain of thanks after the fact, too.)

After having been exposed to one of the bootlegs in person, I'm a lot more confident that this is actually the real thing--but here are the pictures just to be sure.

Front (the letters are stamped in silver even if the lighting was being dumb)
Back (argh, unhelpfully blurry, sorry)
Sebastian and base--and here's where it gets interesting. His foot has always been disconnected. I've had people insist to me that this "just doesn't happen" with official figures, but I've known plenty of official Final Fantasy things (statues and Play Arts) between myself and friends to just kind of "have disconnected parts" in brand new packages. So I'm not sure this is an indication of anything.
From the back

The "standard round seals/stickers" are all accounted for on the top and bottom of the box as well. There's just that foot thing.

If you're looking for pics of the real thing, Tsukiboard's users have uploaded quite some pictures of theirs, and you can see pictures of the bootlegs looking at the entry of the figure, too.

Here are the picture's of the real thing: http://myfigurecollection.net/pictures.php?mode=list&search=figure%3A3492+category%3A%2B1%2B12

Hope it helps you!

@ Fychan - Tsukiboard has actually been of great help, and it's sort of nice to see someone else mentioning them. I was questioning the box in particular as a starting point, but after having talked to a few people and seeing extensive (and finally really, really HQ pictures), I'm convinced this one is real.

Unfortunate conclusion: must negotiate sale now.
