A sneak peek at The Yellow Dino's custom Jouwe
by Brian Szabelski on 09/02/2010 0 comments

Another custom Jouwe appears, this one from Indonesia's The Yellow Dino (a.k.a. Yudi Andhika). He's sent alongsome work in progress pictures of a custom Jouwe he's working on, with the final design apparently going to be like a yellow tiger, which you can check out a preview of in the gallery. Definitely liking how this one is turning out!

This piece will be on display Oct. 2 at the Jouwe Custom Show at Arty Farty in Cologne, Germany. Looking like the show's gonna have a great line-up so far!

Custom Delights: Ever wonder what an Ice Bat looks like inside? Now you know!
by Stephen Donaldson on 09/01/2010 0 comments

Jason Freeny of dissected vinyl toy fame from Qees, to Domo, to Hello Kitty, and most recently the Kidrobot Dunny, has decided to show off the inside of the Ice Bat. Probably the most famous of all of the Uglydolls, this 3" vinyl Ice Bat has been cut open and Jason has so graciously sculpted his insides for us. Sadly, I was hoping that Ice Bats were made of rainbows, magic, and sugar, but what we see here is a tad more realistic. That being said, the realism here is astounding; the ribcage, the keeping of the teeth and eye on the scull, and the bones in the wings are all amazing details especially considering how small he is. More than likely this little guy will wind up on eBay like his Dunny counterpart, so keep an eye out on the Moist Production blog for more info. Also, check out the gallery to see how this guy was made!

Rotobox wants to show you their C.R.A.P.
by Brian Szabelski on 08/31/2010 2 comments

Rotobox Vinyl Anatomica have some C.R.A.P. to show you. That is, their Compact Retaliation Armored Pod. The piece is an amazing custom Jouwe for the upcoming Jouwe Custom Show , and I absolutely love the details on it. Check out the cockpit, for example, and all those sculpted switches, knobs, buttons and panels. Plus, they haven't forgotten to include a little pilot with their piece. Just amazing, asI've come to expect from the Rotobox crew!

This piece will be on display October 2 at the Jouwe Custom Show at Arty Farty in Cologne, Germany. I don't know how you feel about this piece, but I think I'm in love with it.

Andrew R. Shondrick's Possum Munny likes to hang around, quite literally
by Brian Szabelski on 08/31/2010 0 comments

Andrew R. Shondrick is a Cleveland-based artist who's just finished up his first custom Munny or first custom vinyl piece of any kind, the Possum Munny. Sculpted and painted in only six days, the Possum Munny has a little hook tail that lets him actually hang upside down like real opossums do. The piece was created for Vivid Plastic Toys' Lovely Lowbrow Toy Show in Akron, Ohio, that ran through this past weekend.

To check out more about how this all came together, with some great WIP photos, check out Andrew's website. Hopefully, this is just the start for Andrew, because I'd really love to see what else he can come up with!

Check out Jason Freeny's anatomical cutaway custom Dunny
by Brian Szabelski on 08/31/2010 0 comments

Jason Freeny has created a cool little anatomical cutaway Dunny based on an illustration he did. Using a 3" Dunny, Jason sculpted out a skeleton and even guts for the little guy. It's interesting in not only does it look good, but a Dunny's ears apparently are empty. Hmmmmmm.

For more of Jason's work, including the original illustration this Dunny was based on, check out his website. I'd love to see what this looks like in full color!

Frog Mario plush is all d'aww and such
by Nabeel "Touya" Mohammed on 08/31/2010 2 comments

Okay, minor saccharin freakout aside, that is one cute frog Mario plushie. Deviantart user Misscoffee sewed him up recently and had him sold off, but we at Tomopop flipped our collective shizz when this showed up in our newsfeeds.

You will remember the frog suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, it allowed Mario to swim at incredible speeds but more or less hindered his land movement and is generally remembered as one of the quirkier power ups from that game. Looking at this plush just makes me want to dig out my NES and play World 3 all over again.

You can find Misscoffee at the link above.  She has a lot of other plushies up for sale and she even takes commissions. Dig a little further in her gallery and you'll find some truly inspired 2D artwork as well. I've uploaded a sample of her gaming plushes here, but you really should go check this talented lady out. She claims she only started doing plushies a month ago, but that's either shenanigans or she's super duper talented.

Fun challenge:  Browse through her gallery while listening to this song from the Scott Pilgrim game and tell me you're not fighting back some awesome nostalgia tears.

Custom Delights: OsirisOrion's Oil Slick Jouwe
by Brian Szabelski on 08/30/2010 0 comments

OsirisOrion sent along his latest custom, this one for the Jouwe Custom Show on Oct. 10 at Toy Art Gallery. Called "Oil Slick," the piece is a custom Jouwe that lives up to its name. I mean, it sure does look like it's been dipped in a can of oil, doesn't it? I'd love to know just how he got the many different colors to blend so effortlessly.

Sadly, there's not a lot of info yet on the show, even on Toy Art Gallery's website. We'll let you know as soon as we have info on it, though, so keep an eye on Tomopop!

Jan Calleja's Formula Gan F08 custom ready for the racetrack
by Brian Szabelski on 08/27/2010 3 comments

Jan Calleja's back with a new custom, right in time for the F1 season to come back from its summer break: the Formula Gan F08. Standing 7" tall, the custom is based on Ferrari's F2008 F1 car and is rather accurate, right down to the sponsors. This is the second Ferrari Celsius custom he's done, and it's just as impressive as the first.

The piece will be on display at Toy Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Next up, Jan's working on a Forumla Gan based on Renault's 2005 championship car. No one knows yet what Jan will work on after that. Maybe one of the new Red Bull cars from 2010, or one of the older BMW machines. My suggestion? Other than some of the well-known rides, try the Tyrrell P34 or the Ligier JS5, Jan. Imagine how those might look on a Celsius ... well, other than crazy.

Cris Rose's newest Observation Drones have a golden touch
by Brian Szabelski on 08/25/2010 0 comments

Another month, another release from a Mr. Cris Rose of jolly old England. This time around, he's released upon the Internet a set of golden Observation Drones, one each of the Mk2 and Mk3 varieties. Their backstory goes that they had gold paint poured on them by their rich creators as a publicity stunt and promptly went missing. Gee, wonder why?

Unfortunately, these went up and quickly sold out, so some lucky collector's got the whole set. But don't fear: ther's always a chance for more Observation Drones down the line. Especially if gold's not your color.

VISEone's Comic Stripped Jouwe provides your daily dose of Red Hulk
by Brian Szabelski on 08/25/2010 2 comments

VISEone's Comic Stripped series has been really interesting to follow. His latest is just as interesting and awesome: a custom Jouwe wrapped in comic book pages featuring Red Hulk. VISEone chose Red Hulk for a very simple reason: his color matches that of the original Jouwe underneath very well.

This piece will be on display October 2 at the Jouwe Custom Show at Arty Farty in Cologne, Germany. What do you guys think about this custom, though? Sound off in the comments!
