SDCC 2010: Mattel's DC Comics Product overview
by Robert Oden on 07/29/2010 3 comments

Chris Hansbrough is the new Green Lantern of space sector 2814. Deal with it.

Believe it or not, Mattel's DCUC and JLU lines weren't all the DC product the company had to show off at this year's DCUC. In addition to a slew of new Batman: The Brave and the Bold figures, and several new character additions to the fantastic Retro Action line (Guy Gardner!), Mattel revealed their brand new "Action League" of 2.5" mini figures.

What are you waiting for? Check out the gallery to see all the awesome for yourself!

Throwback Thursday: SDCC edition!
by Leah Bayer on 07/29/2010 4 comments

Conventions are full of outrageously priced figures, but every once in a while you can find an amazing deal on something you've been looking for. As most of you probably know, I recently attended SDCC, and with convention season in full swing I thought I'd change it up a bit for today's Throwback Thursday and talk about figures and conventions! Don't worry, we also have a review of not one but two awesome figures, so hit the jump to get started!

SDCC 2010 Mattel WWE Overview
by Matthew Kaplowitz on 07/29/2010 0 comments

Mattel had plenty of awesome stuff at the expo as we already saw, including the amazing Ghostbusters toys that made me ectoplasm in my pants. Another major highlight for me was their unveiling of many new WWE figures, ranging from current superstars to their Legends lineup.

The biggest news was the announcement of the first figure of "Macho Man" Randy Savage in close to a decade, as part of their "Defining Moments" line-up. Why is this such big news? The previous license-holder to WWE figures, Jakks Pacific, spent years trying to get Savage, but Mattel got him almost right away, and the company is expected to release several new Macho Man figures through 2011 and beyond.

Other Legends revealed for release included "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Big Van Vader, Paul Orndorff, The British Bulldog, Brian Pillman, The Rock, The Ultimate Warrior, and in the tag team division, The Rockers, Demolition and The Bushwhackers, among many others.

For their current line-ups, brand new figures were revealed of Sheamus and Yoshi Tatsu, as well as new versions of John Cena, The Undertaker, CM Punk, Randy Orton, The Hart Dynasty, Big Show, The Miz, and several female wrestlers among others. Mattel has shown some great skill already with their WWE figures, as we saw in my review of WWE Legends Ricky Steamboat, and I look forward to what they have to bring this year in terms of all of their pro wrestling lines!

Thanks to Chris H. for the shots from the showroom floor!

SDCC 2010: Mattel's Justice League Unlimited Overview
by Robert Oden on 07/28/2010 3 comments

It's somewhat unusual for a cartoon-based toy line to still be going strong 4 years past the series' cancellation, but Mattel's Justice League Universe is doing just that. It could be said that much of the longevity of the line can be attributed to fan-favorite character choices and the lineup shown at SDCC continues that tradition.

Coming to the line in 2010 are five more single carded figures including OMAC and Ultraman, four three-packs including a JSA themed pack, and new online exclusive two-packs.

2011 brings another wave of five figures including B'wana Beast and Hro Talak and another four three-packs featuring a Justice League International pack with Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and Fire. Awesome. Make sure to check them out in the gallery.

Mattel, you sure know how to make a Marvel fan jealous.

SDCC 2010 Mattel Ghostbusters Overview
by Matthew Kaplowitz on 07/28/2010 4 comments

Being the biggest Ghostbusters fan on staff (proof of it is in my review of the Mattel Peter Venkman figure), I was kicking myself for not being in person at SDCC this year to see all of Mattel's latest GB items. Moreso since a replica Ecto-1 was present at the booth, but also because there was a venerable river of slime's worth of new prototypes on display!

A horde of new 6" Matty Collector items peeked out, including a GB2 Winston with slime blower, a normal Egon Spengler in jumpsuit (to finally fulfill my wish of having an Egon figure which I missed at SDCC last year), Ray Stantz covered in marshmallow goo and a possessed Louis Tully figure. Mattel also rolled out their 8″ Real Ghostbusters Retro Action figures, which will be released in early 2011 and will be made available at Toys R’ Us and at online retailers like the Ghostbusters Fans Shop. The first wave of figures will be Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore.

The biggest news had to be the unveiling of the PKE Meter prop, which came as a welcome surprise to every fan. The PKE Meter will be out “holidays 2010″ and will be available through Matty Collector only (surprise, surprise) for $50-$60 and includes lights, sounds and moving wings. Speculation has exploded as to what else Mattel will surprise us with and if this is the start of many props down the line, including a proton pack!

Check out the gallery for more images and hit the jump for all the release dates! Thanks to Chris H. for the photos!

SDCC 2010: Catching up with ESC-Toy's Erick Scarecrow
by Colette Bennett on 07/28/2010 1 comments

Erick Scarecrow, the man behind ESC-Toy, has made some of the best vinyl in the business for years. Not to mention, he's an absolutely charming dude and totally easy to hang with. After quite a few missed phone calls and frantic runs around the con floor, we were finally able to catch up with Erick to talk about his upcoming projects and know what to look for coming down the pipeline. Hit the jump to watch our interview (and to learn how short I really am).

SDCC 2010: Mattel's DC Universe Classics Overview
by Robert Oden on 07/28/2010 3 comments

Mattel's DC Universe Classics line is extremely hot right now, and judging by the products shown off at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, there is little chance of things cooling down anytime soon.

In addition to reveal of Wave 16 (featuring a PERFECT classic Robin and a Collect-and Connect Bane), Mattel also revealed a new sister line; Green Lantern Classics, full of fan favorites from the history of the Corps including Kyle Raynor, Black Hand, and a Collect and Connect Arkillo.

If all of that wasn't enough, Mattel also announced and showed off part of a new 12-figure Legion of Superheroes containing, among others, Superboy, Saturn Girl, and even Matter-Eater Lad! Check out all these and more in the gallery.

Oh, and I would sell a kidney to get that Hall of Justice backdrop. Seriously.

SDCC 2010: Kotobukiya's test suit Asuka
by Leah Bayer on 07/27/2010 1 comments

We already showed you Kotobukiya's new figures, but they also had some prototypes of upcoming releases on display. My favorite was definitely the test suit Asuka, who I have had on order since the second she went up. Seeing figures in person, however, is a very different thing from looking at test shots. There's no photoshop, no fancy lighting, no tricks of perspective, only the harsh lights of the convention center. And without all that fancy stuff, Asuka still looked amazing. In fact, she looked better! So go check out the gallery to see this gorgeous figure in all her glory.

SDCC 2010: Sideshow Collectibles' Terminator Figures
by Stephen Donaldson on 07/27/2010 0 comments

Sideshow Collectibles' booth had a metric crapton of figures on display for a lack of better words, but a few that really stuck out were their Terminator figures. Featuring 1/6th scale figures, busts, a few enormously large figures, and so on and so forth, it really was quite an impressive display! Also, the life sized Terminator guarding over them all was a really awesome touch; he looked like he was going to come alive and kill us all! If you want to check out all of the awesome robots for yourself, hit the gallery below.
