Brent Nolasco reveals Barrow custom from The Nightmare Before Christmas
by Colette Bennett on 09/02/2010 2 comments

We spied this rather amazing custom from artist Brent Nolasco over at Plastic and Plush today (go there t check out more photos) -- and wow, how cool is this? Created for the Crazy 4 Cult show, this piece is carved entirely from wood, is fully poseable, and marks Nolasco's first time experimenting with the medium. I'd say it's a success -- this is sure to win the hearts of Nightmare Before Christmas fans everywhere.

And yes, I am afraid it's not for sale -- at least, not that we know of. I'm sure many of you are wondering where you can buy it!

ESC-Toy's Taiwan Exclusive Little Axe Snow Forest
by Colette Bennett on 09/02/2010 0 comments

I'm a fan of Erick Scarecrow's limited edition releases, but this one is by far one of my favorites -- I love the colors! This piece, called Little Axe Snow Forest, is a Vince Toy Studio and Shop Taiwan exclusive and is limited to 30 pieces. And of course, they have a story!

"Previously, an obnoxious wolf had lost one of his paws by the chop of a little girl's axe.
His pride was hurt and he decided to trade some of his valuable fur for a weapon with a local blacksmith.

Time had passed and snow blanketed the forest. The wolf practiced with his weapon everyday. One afternoon, the wolf spotted another little girl dressed in white trying to chop wood. Flashbacks of his last encounter with a little girl drove him into a rage.

As he leaped aiming to cut her in two, her twin sister dropped from above and beheaded him. A trap set up by the Snow Forest Twins to grow their collection of wolf heads."

These 6 inch handpainted resin figures haven't been priced yet, but we'll keep you posted when we know more. Check out more pics in the gallery. What do you think?

Cat Girls in Schrodinger`s House, or, the deepst figure you'll ever own
by Colette Bennett on 09/02/2010 7 comments

I very much like this little diorama of a cat girl hanging out with her little bunny ... rabbit ... thing. In her messy bedroom with clothes on the floor, no less. I admit though, I had zero idea what this was. Off to Google, then! With a little investigation, I discovered something pretty interesting. From the Wikipedia entry on Schrodinger;s cat:

"Schrödinger's cat is a paradoxical thought experiment devised by Erwin Schrödinger that attempts to illustrate the incompleteness of the theory of quantum mechanics when going from subatomic to macroscopic systems. This means that there can be two different universes depending on the action taken which in this case is opening the box to see if the cat is dead or not. You can not say the cat is alive or dead until you open the box."

There's more where that came from, too.

At any rate, if you grasp quantum mechanics more than I do, you may want to add this cutesy version of the Schrodinger's cat to your collection (it's #2 in a set, so I assume there will be more). It comes with an instruction booklet with a 4-panel comic included, its 2,350 yen, and it'll be out late this month. Had any of you heard of the Schrodinger's Cat concept before?

What Toys Are Up To: Colette is out of control this week
by Colette Bennett on 09/01/2010 31 comments

I have to apologize -- I went completely out of control with the photos this week -- I just couldn't seem to stop finding them. However, I do have a few things to report about this week's gallery selections:

1. The Toy Story Revoltech Woody is still funny

2. Toy photographer kodomut is still ridiculously talented (proof in gallery)

3. I want to marry the person who made the Kino's Journey custom

4. People are starting to make fun of Black Rock Shooter

5. There's a really incredible Mio vs Billy Herrington picture in there

6. You're not ready for the Hoi Hoi-san turned Vocaloid mod

7. The only thing better than cooking with Figma is probably Figma sleeping bags

Enjoy, share your favorites, and as always, have fun!

NSFW Opinion: Carlos Enriquez' Hierophany
by Colette Bennett on 09/01/2010 20 comments

[The opinions expressed in this piece are all individual and do not reflect the opinion of Tomopop.com as a whole.]

Whether in the art toy world or the often perverse Japanese collectibles sphere, sexuality is a theme that is frequently visited. The take on such work in the art toy world is that it is still art, but collectors seem to rage when the price tag also reflects that of a high end art piece -- look at Murakami's Lonesome Cowboy sculpture, which went for a cool $15 million a few years ago.

Today we spotted Venezuelan artist Carlos Enrique Gonzalez's Hierophany by way of Spanky Stokes's blog, and as you can imagine, staff reaction was strong. You can see the full uncensored photo after the jump, but please be warned that it is NOT SAFE FOR WORK and contains a highly detailed representation of human genitalia. Please DO NOT hit the jump unless you are 100 percent okay with seeing something of that nature!

Clayz's limited edition Noir figure is simply enchanting
by Colette Bennett on 09/01/2010 7 comments

I thought this beautiful lolita looked rather familiar the moment I saw her, but I could not put my finger on why. After asking our own Jonathan Tubbs about it, he reminded me that I wrote about her before -- a very pink version of her. No wonder I didn't recognize her!

This new version is called Noir according to Moeyo, and the character is still based on the "Chronicle" artbook cover from Japanese artists Suzuhira Hiro and Miyagawa Takeshi (which by the way is a heavenly artbook for the moe-obsessed).

1/6th in scale, she is a limited edition colorway and will retail for 9,800 yen through the Petit Jeuness shop. It's Japanese only, so you may need the help of a proxy service if you plan to get your hands on her...

Toy2R and Dark Horse announce two new 7" Domo Qees
by Colette Bennett on 08/31/2010 1 comments

I often get tired of seeing three billion color variations on the same toy, but for some reason, this has not happened to me with the Toy2R Domo Qees collection. Maybe I'm just really into the look, I don't know. The ruby red flocked one my best friend gave me is my favorite, but I can't deny that all these new colors look really good to me.

Following the announcement of the 7 inch Domo Qee collection earlier this month, Toy2R has announced two new limited editions Domos to the collection, Love Green and the DIY. Love Green will be limited to 400 pieces and the DIY version to 200. Both will retail for $59.99 each and you can keep an eye on the Toy2R store to place preorders.

The Wood Grain, Glow in the  Dark, Skeleton and Glitter editions were also recently announced, so make sure to check those out if you haven't already. I think Love Green is my favorite of the batch. What's yours?

New toy company Arts Unknown announces Frank Kozik, Gary Baseman & Doktor A figures
by Colette Bennett on 08/31/2010 0 comments

For me, it's always a thrill to see a new toy company emerge onto the toy scene. UK-based Arts Unknown are the latest in this list of newcomers, but it seems that they intend to introduce themselves with a bang as they have announced their first three figures, and they come from prominent artists such as Dok A, Gary Baseman and Frank Kozik.

Founded by Paul Delfgou and Daniel Kohn, the company intends to offer a membership-only program which will give collectors special benefits at the premium of $100 a year. For that price, you can get one free Members Only colorway per year, priority preordering, invites to all Arts Unknown gallery events and more.

Gary Baseman's figure is called Slugilicious, while Frank Kozik's is called William, Henry and Reginald and Doktor A's is Bella Delemere (this particular colorway of Bella is called "A Casino Affair".) We expect to see more previews of these on the Arts Unknown website once the actual toy sculpts are available, so we will keep you posted. I think I need that Dok A Bella though...

Tomopop Review: Groove's Taeyang Gyro
by Colette Bennett on 08/28/2010 4 comments

I had never heard of Jun Planning or their Pullip and Taeyang doll lines before I got an eyeful of the Kuroshitsuji Sebastian they announced in late 2008. I bought it, naturally, and soon I found myself paying much closer attention to the line. Jun Planning filed for bankruptcy in May 2009, but luckily Groove of Korea took over the line, and there was no interruption in the production of these lovely dolls.

We got word of the elaborate and beautifully detailed Steampunk collection earlier this year, and I've been watching closely and waiting on them. Then, this gentleman arrived at my doorstep, and I found I had two instead of just one — and the desire to own more of them simply tripled. Dolls are like a sickness, as our own Jonathan Tubbs can attest to. And if I've caught it, well ... too late now!

Hit the jump for our review of Gyro from Groove's Taeyang line!
